Today is my birthday! I turned 26 :] I liked 25 better. Something about the symmetry of the number was perfect. But I think this year is going to be more fun than last year.
I thought back about my last few birthdays. Since I graduated college I’ve had 5. Here is what I did on each:
Turned 21: Spent a week in Vegas with my family. It was a trip my dad and I had been planning (and saving for) since I was about 10 years old. No joke! But by the time I turned 21 I had lost the gambling bug. I didn’t like Vegas that much. Everything was expensive and none of the pools had diving boards. We ate out at, I think, Margaritaville. I didn’t drink any alcohol. I don’t drink that stuff. [Even though I’m not a big fan of Vegas] It was a great day.
Turned 22: I went and picked strawberries by myself. It was nice : ) That’s all I remember doing! I’m sure I worked about 12 hours too.
Turned 23: I’m not actually sure what I did on this day. I probably picked berries again. But I think maybe it was raspberries this time. I don’t actually remember! I don’t consider my birthday a very eventful day, but I like to make it a “me” day and I love picking berries so that’s what I try to do if I’m in Portland on my birthday.
Turned 24: I surprised my [twin] sister by showing up in Georgia. I think I showed up a day or two before actually. It was the first time we had been together on our birthday since… maybe 18? I’m not sure. On our birthday we went on a hike together just the two of us, and then we (my mom, her husband, friends, and I) had a surprise party for her at the local pool. My brother also showed up to surprise her. It was a great day : )
Turned 25: Spent the day in Avignon. That’s where I was living at the time. In the afternoon/evening I walked around the city with my friend Cyril. I treated myself to ice cream and for some reason we went and saw Space Odyssey 2001. It was the most boring movie I have ever seen (!!), and I feel asleep in the theater. It was a really good birthday though.
Turned 26: The days isn’t over yet (it’s 6:45pm as I write this). I went and picked strawberries. Again :D I also have put in about 6 hours of work today including checking in at the factory and leading a training session at PDX fencing. The girls made me brownies and cupcakes. I felt super special. I really did! I’m always surprised when people remember or notice my birthday. Tonight I’m going to pick my brother and mom up from the airport and go see my cousins too. Afterwards I will probably stay up working until 2 or 3 in the morning because I have lots of things to do! It has been a pretty relaxed day. My birthday always is. That’s how I like it : )
This year I am moving to a small “a”. The second ‘a’ in “Adam” to be exact. It’s the 27th letter of my name. “A”s means starts. My big start was the capital ‘A’ which was my 25th year (when I was 24). Capitals are always more prominent. In that year I sold my company and moved to France to work with David. This year more changes/starts will be taking place, but they won’t be as prominent. (Really, nothing could be as prominent as what I did on my capital A year. It set the whole course of the rest of my life in motion. That’s why it was a capital.) This year I’ll be taking on lots of new projects and go in a bit of a new direction too. It won’t be a surprise though. The projects have already been set into motion so I know what it is.
I don’t really like getting presents. I feel like I have everything I need, so I try to reverse the trend and give things away on my birthday. My grandfather did this when I was young and I liked it so now I do it. Every year now for Take Flight I organize lots of giveaways and a birthday sale on June 27th. That’s always fun to do.
What I really like on my birthday is just having a calm day where I don’t have to do anything. And then texts and calls from people I care about, and people posting on my Facebook wall makes my day as special as a birthday could be. And if people do unexpected things like make me brownies that is the icing on the cake. My birthday couldn’t be better : )
