All thoughts are original. Lots of longer thoughts this week. Copied over from Twitter and Whatsapp convos.

If meaning is relative then hierarchies seem to be required; or to say it another way, differentiation is required. But perhaps this is over reaching. Perhaps differentiation is only required in order to have labels. It seems that one can find meaning without differentiation, and it seems that even without differentiation meaning can still be in the eye of the beholder.

I am a huge fan of Elon. However, it’s clear that the capabilities of self-driving software has incalculably more potential than digging tunnels. I imagine the boring company will be a successful company in building targeted tunnels from airports to city centers. In this capacity their method is fantastic, as is their core vision which is to get people where they need to go more quickly. However, self-driving cars will eliminate traffic by optimizing the flow of cars in EVERY city much sooner than The Boring Company solves traffic in even one.

Also. Traffic circles and educational videos from the government about how to drive.

Marketing vs. value. The delineation is generally clear. But what if the value of entertainment is based entirely on marketing? This is the one of the most important contemporary business questions.

The media loves Trump. Trump loves the media. They are both complicit in the negativity we see today.

I am still sorting through what it means to be intelligent. IQ is the simplest and most scientifically supported concept with the delineation being made between general intelligence and skills / proclivities. This seems self-evident although not entirely clear, and yet good enough to work with so we’ll consider it a grounded foundation. However, the Trump situation has caused problems in this theory because I have observed some of the people I know with the highest IQs to be seemingly incapable of sorting through their own emotional bias and incapable of analyzing nuance and other perspectives (e.g. empathy). This has led some of the smartest people I know (those with the highest IQ) saying things that are clearly, and obviously wrong, so as to make them seem borderline retarded (that’s a technical term relating to IQ, so it is appropriate). We see this seeming intellectually ceiling appear at every contentions issue in human history (Galileo’s time come to mind), so this leads to a new working idea: Ken Wilbur speaks of “consciousness” but I am trending toward labeling his terminology as lazy and unscientific. Perhaps we can be more clear and say that general intelligence (IQ) and objectivity/bias (a skill in and of itself that is independent of IQ) are the two inter-working concepts that determine someone’s true real world intelligence. After all, the ability to acquire knowledge, process information, and recognize patterns, may give someone a high IQ and thus a high intellectual potential, but such an ability is completely useless if it is not practically applied. As always, I’d like very much to hear the thoughts of others on this topic, for clearly I am unsatisfied with the contemporary explanations of intelligence, even those being made my world renown scientists and philosophers. Or maybe the answer is already there and I just need to read more. My guess is this is likely.

Many say that acting requires vulnerability. With all respect to so many great actors and coaches, I think that’s the wrong approach. Acting is freedom. It’s experience without the consequence because everyone knows you’re acting. Real life, however? Now that takes vulnerability.

The idea of “true value” has been something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. What is true objective value creation and how does it exist beyond subjective evaluations? As an entrepreneur, I have grown to believe that longevity in business is rooted in true value creation.

Entertainment is a level of enjoyment people receive. It is subjective and can be influenced by marketing. Value on the other hand speaks to objective value creation – product innovation or services that bring efficiencies or advantages to individuals and companies.

In a purely scientific world, true value creation is all that matters. But as humans, joy is an imperative, and so entertainment has substantial value for most individuals. Thus we see why analyzing these things are important so we can delineate the two (objective and subjective value) and understand how to build and run companies with short and long term viability. Some companies will naturally focus on value creation (B2B companies especially), while those that face general consumers may focus entirely on subjective values (entertainment).

Those who ardently wave the flag of socialism say through their actions, “Capitalism is amazing, but it’s not amazing enough.” I have huge admiration for this ideology. The problem is not the thinking. The problem is reality.

Which of these is the best approach:

1) Increase taxes on individuals

2) Increase taxes on companies

3) Hold politicians accountable to better spend tax revenue

Funny how one of these never gets proposed by politicians #GetOutTheVote is a joke and an insult to Americans.

I remember when the MOST viewed video on YouTube had 100M views. Now we get videos reaching 100M in a couple weeks. Phenomenal. I am excited to see where the platform is in 10 years. My guess is by then it will have destroyed traditional TV. Come to think of it, it’s kind of already destroyed with Netflix, Hulu, and others.
